Journey to Gabrielle Grace Meng Xin

On April 25, 2005, we rushed to Halifax to pick up the long-anticipated referral for our second daughter. Her name turned out to be Dong Fang, Meng Xin, which translates as "happy dream from the East". She will now be known as Gabrielle Grace Meng Xin Frosst. We fell in love with her instantly. She is so beautiful. We know she was always meant to be our daughter and Genesis` baby sister. We thank God for bringing her to us. She was born on July 27, 2004, and left to be found that same day. We thank her mother who risked great peril in order to ensure that her daughter would have a chance at life. Gabrielle currently resides at the Taihe County Social Welfare Institute in Jiangxi province, China. We have been so happy to discover that this small orphanage, although very poor, provides much love and affection to the children. We can't wait until we leave for China on June 11, 2005, to finally bring Gabrielle home. We get to celebrate her first birthday with her! Although we have yet to see Gabrielle in person and have never held her in our arms, it seems we have loved her and missed her for such a long time. Happily, that long time is almost over! Thank you for coming to this site and sharing our journey to Gabrielle with us.
Gotcha day!  - 2005-06-14
This morning, we finally met Gabrielle at the Jiangxi adoption registration office. Of course, the babies from our orphanage were a half hour later than the rest to arrive! What a wait that was. It was overwhelming when we finally got her in our arms. She was a little scared at first but cried for less than 5 seconds. She quickly became very happy and comfortable with both of us. She is eating great and loves all the attention she can get. She also eats more than I do! This day was all we dreamed of and more. Gabrielle has the sweetest, gentlest personality and is so beautiful. Our afternoon was filled with legal appointments to complete the adoption. We are all exhausted now and ready for bed. I can't wait for Genesis to meet her. Bye for now, Melvin
Orphanage visit - 2005-06-16
Today, we visited Gabrielle's orphanage and also got treated to lunch by the orphanage director. We discovered that all babies at Taihe are adopted before age 2 or so. We bought 2 air conditioners and 3 walkers for the babies rooms with the funds donated for the orphanage. Taihe County is so hot, you would never believe it. It is much more unbearable than Nanchang. The site we ate lunch at was actually the same spot where Gabrielle was found - the Civil Affairs building. This is a day we will never forget. My only solace is knowing that eventually all of the children I saw today will find a forever home. It cannot come soon enough.

Today, I felt like I had a glimpse of how the heart of God must feel. Sometimes, seeing and knowing things is very difficult. God knows and sees it all.

Last Day in Nanchang - 2005-06-17
Today is our final day in Gabrielle's home province of Jiangxi. After completing more paperwork and appointments we had supper in an authentic Chinese restaurant. It was unbearably hot in the building but the food was good. You are drenched in sweat minutes after leaving your hotel room here due to the heat and humidity.

Gabrielle was up 3 or 4 times in the night. She seemed to feel much better physically today following a poop! She does not want to sleep at night unless Maxine or I are holding her. She seems to experience memories that are quite difficult for her. She has been through so much at 10 months of age and I admire her strength and determination. Through it all, she remains the sweetest, gentlest creature and Maxine and I love her so much. We can't wait to get home to Genesis and be a family.

Last night, our guide came to our room to talk to us. When everyone else received the translation of their birth note, she had indicated to us that ours was too difficult to immediately translate. In our room, she told us that the note left with Gabrielle was the most special she had ever seen. Most notes usually just indicate a birthdate but hers was very complex and detailed. It was written on thick, beautiful red parchment in antique language used prior to 1930 by well-educated individuals. The complex Chinese characters were not used or understood by the average person. Each one told a story. Our guide, Kiki, suspects the note was written by the mother's father. She also suspects that the girl's family used to be very rich and traditional. During the Cultural revolution, the poor took the riches of the rich and distributed them amongst the poor. The rich suffered. This family although now may be poor continues to hold the old values and be very traditional. The note started by speaking about their family book which is very important to Chinese people as they honour their ancestors. It acknowledges Gabrielle's place in this book in their family. The note indicates the year she was born according to the "Yellow Calendar" which is a calendar used to forecast the future. It indicates good fortune and luck for this child due to the smooth and not painful birth. It states that Heaven/God gave birth to this child. It indicates her birthday as June 11 according to the Chinese calendar which is July 27 to us. It says she was born at 2 AM. It says that after the birth, the mother recovered. It identifies the mother as single and having always lived with her parents. She was to be in an arranged marriage as a virgin and existed in her room. She lived a very traditional/reserved life. It was signed "With Respect". Kiki speculated that this traditional girl may have met a boy she could not marry. She called it a "romantic" story. She said that the very traditional family wanted to "save face" for their daughter. She said the father must have loved her very much and wanted to protect her. They did not want to abandon the baby but saw no other choice. They wanted to also bless the baby. She said it was the most touching note she had ever read and it was carefully written so that the baby would remember it forever due to its specialness. It is difficult for us to understand but to the Chinese this note is really a gift and a blessing to Gabrielle.

Home update - 2005-06-27
I was extremely sick for two days. The day I got home, I had trouble balancing when I walked and was nauseous and other fun stuff. I felt better yesterday but by that time Maxine was sick. Genesis has been great with Gabrielle - very caring and helpful. We are so proud of her. We take Gabrielle to see Dr. Park this morning concerning her skin. The stress of the long trip home seemed to cause it to flare up again. Bye for now.-Melvin
