Shicheng Orphanage2006-03 - I can give you some information about the orphanage. It is new, built only about three years ago now, and the six babies in our group were the first babies adopted from there. "Shi Cheng" means "stone city" and so all the babies from the orphanage are given the last name "shi" or stone. In talking to Chinese friends, they say that Shi Cheng is in the mountainous region where the Communist revolution got going -- a really remote part of China. When we were there last May, the director, Ye Zhong Guo, said that the orphanage had only 30 babies, all under one year at that time. Most were in foster care (all six babies in our group had been in foster care the whole time except the last month before we arrived). When I expressed the desire to someday visit Shi Cheng, my Chinese friends looked worried and said that there is no state road and probably there are bandits -- they said it wouldn't be safe. So it is very remote. The orphanage director hoped we would visit someday "when there is a road." (JS) 2004-06 - In June 2005 two families in France received referrals from this orphanage. Perhaps this orphanage has just started doing international adoptions. Both girls have the surname of "Shi". A Jiangxi province map shows Shicheng in southern Jiangxi along the eastern border and is fairly near Ningdu (from where other children have been adopted internationally). Hopefully these families will learn more about Shicheng when they travel for their adoption and we would also love to hear from anyone else who has adopted from Shicheng or receives a referral from there.
There is now an email list for families who have or are waiting to adopt from Shicheng. You can subscribe by sending a message to ShichengFamilies-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
