Nanchang Municipal Social Welfare Institute
The orphanage is also referred to as Jiangxi Provincial Social Welfare Agency
in Nanchang and is in the city. The orphanage is quite a large one, when visited
in 1999 I was told they care for over 500 children. (I traveled with the
Amity staff to see the work we're been sponsoring through them.) This
orphanage has been in existence for many years although the current building
that houses the children is a fairly new. One family was told it was considered "one of the better
orphanages" in China, and also that it's likely that most of babies come
from the outlying villages of Nanchang. We traveled to adopt in March 1996 and were not
allowed to visit the orphanage. See China Adoption of Claire Lianne in Sept.
1995 for an account, with some pictures, from a family who did visit.
The last group that I know of that was allowed to visit (before visits were stopped
for a few years) was in February 1996.
The Nanchang orphanage now seems to be open to visitors again.
I visited in June and November of 1999 with the Amity staff (photos at http://www.gurrad.com/june
) and again in April 2002. I have heard of quite a few other adopting families that have been allowed to visit around that time or
more recently. A couple families sent photos, one visiting in March
2000 and one in January 2002.
Currently the babies who are getting adopted and were born in 1996 and later
all have the surname Hong. Those born in late 1994 through 1995 (and mostly
adopted in 1995 and 1996) had the surname Chen, which is the name of the
assistant director Ms. Chen Lingling. Jeff's daughter, at the above website, was born in 1994 and had the surname Feng
as did most in their group.
2007-12 - Galactic Hotel Review -
We stayed at
the Galactic Hotel and loved it. We utilized the pool as our new daughter
loved to swim and our two little daughters
loved it too. I utilized the steam
room. I wish I had one at home! The restaurant across the street is
great, I agree! The new location of Tiffanies
Place is nearby. The street the
Hotel sits on has really cheap ice cream bars (.10) just a few shops
down when turning right when leaving the hotel
front. The staff could not be
nicer! It is very close to the CCAA office and not far from
Wal-Mart and the big
shopping street near the Wal-Mart.
We had a great time. Also we took
a cab to a place called the Free Market. Maybe your guide will no
where to send the cab. It is a multi story
building that sells
children's clothes,
shoes, material, and anything else you can imagine for CHEAP. It
is much cheaper than Wal-Mart
and any other shops that we found. (WR)
