I have heard from several families who've adopted daughters from Guixi.
None have had a chance to visit the orphanage. But the above photo on the left shows the
orphanage director on your right and one of the foster moms on the left (click to
enlarge). The photo on the right shows the orphanage director on the right
and a caretaker on the left (click to enlarge). According to one of the guides,
Guixi is about 150 km from Nanchang and has a population of about 100,000. It is famous
Taoism, apparently Taoism was actually founded in Guixi. The only photo I have so far is a
picture of a copper smeltery in Guixi found in a tourist brochure of Jiangxi.
From a mom traveling May 1997: "I didn't get to visit Guixi and I've
never found anyone who has. It's four hours away from Nanchang and I got the impression
from my guide/translator that a trip there was not a very good idea. Its not an orphanage
but a social welfare institution with people of all ages residing there. Its also very,
very rural. Most of the babies that go for adoption are put into foster care. Foster care
in a rural city like Guixi is a a way for poor rural families to supplement their
income; so there is no shortage of foster care.
And then in August 1998 a U.S. businessman wrote the following:
"I spent two weeks in Guixi on a business trip. It was a fascinating trip, but
I think that your guide is correct in that it is extremely rural and is really not setup
for overseas tourists. The locals are extremely friendly, and eager to meet new
people, and of course love to practice their English. One of my co-workers has some
of the pictures on his personal web page, http://home.att.net/~ggbiun,
it includes some that I took. The pictures really do not do justice to the area,
because they really can't capture the spirit of the place. I have to tell you that
the road trip to Guixi is not for the faint hearted. There is a train from Shanghai that
is probably more enjoyable. The accommodations at the guest house are nice, but don't
try to equate it with modern facilities in the west or those in Nanchang. There is a
Taoist shrine halfway between Guixi and Nanchang. It's a beautiful shrine but
really out of the way. The locals all suggested other more notable sites. I
have some extra photos scanned in which are not in the above web site." (see below)
