Adoption in China
By Peggy Gurrad

Nankang Social Welfare Institute

2005-06 - A family that adopted from Jianxin in March 2002 was told their daughter was originally at the Nankang City SWI before being transferred to Jianxin. (BR)

It appears that initially Nankang was not doing international adoptions and that some of the children were transferred to Jianxin for this reason.  The parents of two children adopted in March 2002 from Jianxin orphanage were told their children had been transferred there from the Nankang orphanage where they were originally.  They had the name Gan Kang xxxxx.  Jianxin accepts children from several different orphanages and appears to add Gan as the new surname but keeps the surname of the previous orphanage (Kang if from Nankang) as part of the given name.  In 2004 children were adopted directly from the Nankang orphanage (and had the surname of Kang) so it appears Nankang is now doing its own international adoptions.

2004-08-03 - Another family has reported that they have received a referral from Nankang SWI.  She was born 2003-10-03 and had a SWI name of Kang Shu.

Report - YES, we have traveled and have been home almost six weeks now.  I can't believe it! We left on September 1 and returned the 16th.

We received our daughter on the evening we arrived in Nanchang (9/5).  The babies were brought to our hotel.  We met the orphanage director, Mr. Liu and two of the nannies.  All were very nice.  Very business like, and tired.  They had spent ten hours by bus traveling to Nanchang.

Mr. Liu was taking pictures of the three families who received Nankang sweeties, lots of them!  My understanding from James (our CCAI rep) is that this orphanage had not been used much by CCAI, but will be in the future.  Maybe the pictures were for the director to share with CCAA? Not quite sure.  We did receive back our disposable camera we had sent in her care package, but none of the other items, including our family photo album.  :-(  Oh well, we will treasure the pictures we received back! (HCP)

2004-04-16 - It has been reported that Nankang SWI is now participating in international adoptions.  A family reports a referral from this SWI on 2004-04-09.

I received my daughter in Nanchang, at the civil affairs building. My daughter was placed in my arms by one of the nannies (not hers). We did not meet the orphanage director.

I have very little information about Nankang. Until now, I haven't heard of any other referrals from there. What I do know is that it is a very poor, rural city, in the southern part of Jiangxi. Its so far south, that it's practically in Guangdong. Someone was kind enough to e-mail a map of Jiangxi and pin pointed Nankang.

There were 10 families in our travel group. All the babies were from Nankang SWI. All were healthy and well cared for. (JAL)
