Adoption in China
By Peggy Gurrad

Ningdu Orphanage

2004-11 - The older photos (shown in the link below) are the old SWI. The new facility is the Children's Welfare Institute.  They have moved 'recently' (and after some debate on the list we can't quite nail down the date).  We were told that the move to the new facility has helped to facilitate a greater number of international adoptions.  The photos of the new CWI are where the children are located.  I asked the director in August if there were two facilities in NingDu, and she said no. (Lisa)

2004-09 - My daughter is born in Ningdu, March 2000. We live in Norway and went to Nanchang in June 2001 to get our girl. I talked a lot with the director of Ningdu Orphanage when I was in Nanchang. He told me there where never more than six children in each room because they believe a small child can't easily connect to many children at once. That's also why each child have main contact with the same two nurses, the all time they are at the orphanage. Each nurse looks after three children. Hugging nannies live in the same Welfare Institute and visit the orphanage regularly. In 2001 there where 36 children in the orphanage. Very often the babies are found at the orphanage gate by the elder people who goes for exercise in the early morning.

They do have enough rice and bananas for the children, but not enough vitamins/protein compare to Scandinavian diet. All of the six children in our group had very dry skin but where healthy. We gave the orphanage a lot of baby clothes and quilts for the wither, they were very thankful. If you wonder what to bring them, remember baby oil for dry baby skin. (F.S.)

Some families received their referral for a child from this orphanage in August 1999.  This was the first time I'd heard of someone adopting from this orphanage but there have been several adoptions since.  On the map Ningdu appears to be a smaller town and is in the southern part of the province.  It took one person five and a half hours to get there by bus (including stops)
