Xinyu Social Welfare InstituteFrom an adopting mother: "In April 1994, long before the problems of "The Dying Rooms" video, we were told that the orphanage in Xin Yu was just too far away and the roads were just too bad for Westerners to travel, so they'd bring the babies into Nanchang. Several of us wanted to go back and see the orphanage, take pictures, etc., but we were told that if we wanted to spend our first day with our daughters being car sick, well, they could arrange the trip, but ... and no one took them up on the offer after that! However, we were given some pictures of the orphanage and our children there." (ES) From another mom traveling in the same group in 1994: "We were given a video of the orphanage taken the same day our daughter's were selected for us. It was quite bleak. Since then I've corresponded with the director Madame Xu. She told me in a letter last spring that they had broken ground for a new facility--I assume it was paid for in part by adoptive family donations. I just got another letter from her January 2 and the construction is set for this spring. Madame Xu and the caretakers were so loving. They were so understaffed but this may have improved since they've started receiving the adoption money. Judging from pictures of other babies coming out of Xinyu since ours I think that conditions have improved. (SB) 2001 Photos of the Orphanage
