Yiyang Orphanage
Jiangxi Province
Note: There is also a Yiyang
orphanage in Hunan province. It is larger than the one in Jiangxi province
and does a higher number of international adoptions.
I've been in contact with two families that adopted from this orphanage on
September of 1997. Prior to this I hadn't heard of anyone adopting from this
orphanage. Perhaps it is like a couple others we've learned about recently. It
may be smaller and/or more remote and didn't have the contacts to do international
adoptions before this. A Nanchang resident supplies this info: "Yiyang is
in northeast Jiangxi province and is in the Shangrao district of Jiangxi province. It is
said that Yiyang and Yanshan, another county neighboring Yiyang, are both famous for the
beauty of the women in ancient times. Do you know red army in China? If you are
interested in China history, you will know that there is a famous red army leader from
Yiyang."
From the parents who adopted September 1997: "The trip was fantastic and the
baby is wonderful. We didn't get to go to Yiyang and learned nothing about the
orphanage but all the girls appeared to be healthy. Our daughter had obviously
been in foster care--pudgy by comparison to some of the others." (DN) "The
babies were healthy for the most part, some colds and sniffles, but nothing too serious.
Some had skin infections and other problems. I would be willing to talk
privately with families that have a referral to this orphanage and are waiting to travel.
The children from our orphanage had great immunization records. Our daughter
and many others only had to take the oral polio vaccine and no shots. We did not
learn anything about the orphanage and our guide only said that Yiyang was a very, very
poor city." (LT)
And another September 1997 family: We received our daughter when she was
about 16 months old. She was very healthy, had detailed records of immunizations,
used chopsticks and knife fork and spoon with equal facility and was clearly loved and
well cared for. (FS/CS 9/97)
Another 1997 family: We adopted our daughter when she was 15
months old, and although she was very undernourished (weighing only 15.8
pounds), she was otherwise healthy. She bonded with us almost immediately
and was a very happy, loveable little girl who rarely cried. As long as she was
held, she was happy! She wasn't behind developmentally either and was just
beginning to walk and talk. In fact, she was talking nonstop by 18 months and
potty trained at two. We were very surprised to find out after we got home
that she had a very high lead level of almost 60 (below 10 is normal). This
really took us by surprise because she was such a bright, alert, healthy little
girl with no symptoms whatsoever! In fact, our pediatrician had her tested
twice because she didn't think it was accurate. However, unfortunately, it was
and she was put on a treatment program for about a year with medication and is
now lead free. And since lead poisoning can cause learning disabilities, we had
her tested through the Preschool screening program and she tested above average
in everything so it didn't affect her at all. She is now in her second year of
preschool, which she loves, and is doing very well. We'd be glad to talk
to anyone who has received a Yiyang referral and we'd also be interested to hear
if any other children adopted from this area had lead problems. (JH, a.

And another 1997 family: Our daughter is healthy although she was probably undernourished at the time we received
her. She was under 10 pounds at five months of age. We discovered after
arriving home that she was hypothyroid. This may have resulted in her failure to
thrive as well as she would have otherwise. She now takes medicine for her thyroid
and is otherwise completely healthy. I would be glad to speak with anyone who has
received a Yiyang referral. (TF, 12/97)
Since these 1997 adoptions there have been several more
adoptions from the Yiyang orphanage. One writes: "During our
trip we were invited to visit the orphanage. It is clean, well maintained, and
most of all, our children received excellent care and were loved. Many of the
nannies cried when they saw the babies leave for the last time." (CL, a.
