Adoption in China
By Peggy Gurrad

DirectorYongxiu Social Welfare Institute

The first families that I know of to adopt from this orphanage adopted in April 1998.  One of these moms writes the following:  "This is a small Social Welfare Institute, located in a town outside of Nanchang.  At the time of our adoption our agency told us they had 33 children and 20 seniors. We don't have any pictures.  Our daughter was obviously cared for and loved, as she is a sweet, loving child.  She hugs us and her stuffed bears, gives us very sloppy wet kisses (the best) and has a smile that lights up her whole face.  She is our second daughter from China, and we just couldn't be happier with our family." (CS, 4/98)

Then there was a group of four families that adopted in December 1998.  Four photos were given to each of the families.  One family had also sent a disposable camera to the orphanage before they traveled and received it back at the time of the adoption.   Some of these photos along with the four photos given to all the families have been added to the website (see the link below).  According to one of the moms in this group: "The Yongxiu Welfare home is approximately 45 kilometers north of Nanchang.   I was told that there were about 50 children there at the time we adopted our daughter in Dec 1998.  There were three other girls adopted from there in our travel group. Our girls ranged in age from 23 to 27 months. All were very clean and healthy. The girls were brought to us at the Jin Feng hotel in Nanchang by the orphanage director, Mr Cai, and four nannies. I believe that Leah was well cared for. She is very affectionate and very obedient.  She knows quite a few Chinese words, and is learning English remarkably well. At 24 months, she was walking, still taking a bottle and in diapers, weighed 20 lbs and was 29 inches tall.  Our families had to travel north two and one-half hours by bus from Nanchang to get our documents notarized. The scenery was breathtaking. Lots of beautiful mountains. Mr Cai went with us. He had our driver detour to show us some of the damage caused by the recent flood.  It was a very pleasant trip.  We did not get to see the orphanage ourselves, but I sent a disposable camera to Mr Cai before we traveled, and one of the nannies took pictures of Leah for us, returning the camera when we received Leah. All the pictures were taken either in a common wood-paneled room, or just outside the orphanage, none of their sleeping area. Mr Cai took pictures of all the girls with their families and requested that we send them updated pictures a couple of times each year." (SJ, a. 12/98)

1998 Photos of the Orphanage

We visited Yongxiu Welfare Institute in December 99 when we went to China to receive our beautiful new daughter, Yong Yi. Take comfort in knowing it is a wonderful, bright, happy place (as happy as an orphanage can be!) and we were very impressed. The children are very active and given lots of attention. That was very obvious to us by the differences between her and our first adopted Chinese baby, who came from a very poor orphanage. The workers at Yongxiu and the director brought smiles to our baby's face, which warmed our hearts. (JB/CB)

A member of our travel group had heard that the Yongxiu orphanage was very open to visitors, so she asked our guide to contact Mr. Cai (the director) for permission to visit. He agreed, and met us at the notary office and we all made the trip to the orphanage. The orphanage was down an alley next to the Yangtze river. The staff set off firecrackers on our arrival (startling the babies as well as the adults).  We were able to tour the orphanage, which was clean and bright, look around by ourselves all we wanted, and talk to the nannies. They served us refreshments and could not have been nicer.  (SS, a. 6/01)
